The Listener I

While researching historical botanical women artists of Aotearoa, I found it essential to listen to the lessons of the past to inform future plans for our native flora.

Immortellis I & II

Is a memorial to the Poor Knights Climber, Tecomanthe Speciosa, nearly extinct, a single plant was saved from introduced pests and brought back to Aotearoa, propagated and distributed to save it.

Immortellis II

This wreath is a memorial to Trilepidea adamsii, an extinct mistletoe of Aotearoa.  Found in the 1880’s in only a few locations in the North Island, habitat destruction, and the arrival of the brushtail possum introduced from Australia, was the final act that saw the end of this plant.

Pollen I

In botany, the study of pollen under magnification reveals a fascinating world, showcasing its unique beauty. This work explores the pollen particles found in their pure form, embodying the promise and potential of life and regeneration. The beauty of pollen is highlighted through this exploration.

Petal I & II

These works are porcelain over sized petals made for an installation work

Form and Fit

These works are a  study in abstracted biomorphic forms, referencing the botanical world I have immersed myself in.

Biomorphic form

Biomorphic Form

Ceramic sculpture with a bronze stamen – this mixed media abstracted work was developed while working with botanical forms, exploring in bronze.

Aotearoa/New Zealand Broom

A tiny flower on a lovely plant, this sculpture has been magnified many many times.  The original flower is around 3-4mm big, growing in clumps along the branches, and creating microscopic pod casings that fall apart leaving a skeletal frame from which the seed is contained.  The latin name – Carmichaelia kirkii.

Composite I

An abstract composite form this work explores the relationship between the differing forms, the pyramidal base, circular body and the coned top.  The use of matte and glossy glazes developed in a glazing paper really brought this work to life.

The Listener II

An abstracted form this work explores the composite forms that link together to make a new whole.  This work Listener II is a follow on from the work above.  Exploring shapes that echo both botanical forms and sound instruments. listening to the earth, listening for the past, listening for guidance on the future.

The Listener III

This form took a pierced cone through the body of the sculpture.  Exploring the act of active listening, this device is exploring the dichotomy of listening and hearing, two very different things.  The pierced work on this sculpture was enhanced with the application of the glaze as it wound its way through the body.

Magnolia Cube

These cubes were an exercise in slab building.  They were also my first opportunity to work with scraffito on the surface of the cubes, a magnolia on one and an Abstracted topographical on the other.

Small Abstract I & II

These works are studies in looking at the dish and cone shape, with both supporting or piercing through elements that explore line and composite forms.

Magnolia flowers I & II

In celebration of the Magnolia trees that surround our home, Magnolia I with a bronze branch and buds and a porcelain flower,  ‘Magnolia II’ a singular porcelain  flower bloom.
