Bio

A deep connection with this land has fostered my commitment to environmental issues. Concerns around climate change and its effects continue to drive my art practice.
Taking inspiration from the female botanical artists who arrived in Aotearoa/New Zealand in the mid-1800s. My goal is to uncover their stories and celebrate their contributions. These women were dedicated to documenting the disappearing flora before it was completely lost, and my work reflects the ongoing loss of many of our endangered plants.
Through the delicate ceramics featured in my pieces, I aim to represent these precious botanical plants and highlight the fragility of life, as well as the rapid decline of biodiversity in our landscape.
I use porcelain to reference the Victorian struggle between domestic compliance and a rebellious curiosity about the environment. This material serves as a reflection of documented domestic life and its remnants. Aotearoa/New Zealand in the mid 1800’s I seek to uncover their stories and celebrate their lives. These women had a commitment to document the disappearing flora before it was completely gone, and my own work speaks to the growing loss of and the status of many of our endangered plants.

the beginning
My interest in sculpture was sparked by a visit to The MET, New York. Seeing the disembodied fragments of ancient sculpture intrigued me. I noticed how the headless became objectified, and the bodiless became mask like.
Without references you were given to wonder what the body might have told you about the expression of the face. The powerful transformation the pieces undergo and how it struggled to convey the original intent as a fragment.
Working in bronze my works explore that fragmentation, where marginalised sections of our fragmented society whether through gender, religion or race are seen as ‘other’ within the community, and where once powerless are given a voice.
